Laymetha, nicknamed “Lay”,  always expressed a desire to sing and play the piano. Her early childhood years demonstrated that she had a natural vocal ability and a strong will to achieve in the field of music.  Her desire continued and was evidenced by her participation in almost  every musical opportunity that was  presented.   While attending Old Dominion University, Laymetha started writing her own material. It wasn’t long before her singing and song writing skills were noticed by top radio executives at WOWI radio station in Norfolk, Virginia. As a result,  she was chosen to perform her material in a singer/songwriter competition, The Budweiser Showdown,  for two consecutive years.  She performed before well known recording artists and placed 1st Runner Up, which led to a recording contract being offered by  Capitol Records.  This however did not fulfill her dream to become a recording artist.  In July of 1991, Laymetha performed her debut concert as a gospel singer and she hasn’t stopped since.  Between 1992 and 1994 she performed at the Black Expo held at the Norfolk  Scope. She participated in the first annual Hampton Road’s Gospel Fest, in which  she won first place.  She performed at Bible Way in Washington, DC with Gerald Albright and the Richmond Tri-City Mass Choir.   In  October of 1997, Mrs. Guy was chosen to be honored by the Black Church Cultural Affairs Committee, as a ‘Community Leader and Achiever’ for her excellence in Gospel Music.   In 1998 Laymetha won the ‘Sunshine Award’, for excellence in  recorded Gospel Music,  presented by WRAR Radio station 105.5 FM in Tappahannock, VA.   In  March of 1998, Laymetha released a six song CD entitled’ “No Greater Love”.  In 2001 “ From My Heart” was released in which her brother, Deacon Elliott Reed is a featured soloist and also performs background vocals.  This release captured the essence of  old time gospel as well as contemporary and inspirational tracks.  Her latest release is a collaboration of standards with a new flavor and jazzy style.  This new project called "Cornerstone" was released in September 2009.
